Please join us Saturday, August 12th for a very special day! This is both a reception for our new exhibit and the Grand Opening of our Makerspace. Doors open at 12 noon and the main event is from 1 – 4 PM.

With our new exhibit Art Meets Tech, we’re hoping to invigorate the arts in our community by breaking into new mediums and putting new spins on traditional art.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Sun Gallery if we weren’t making art creation accessible and inspiring to all!

This is why we’re opening up a brand new Makerspace alongside our Art Studio. This will enable artists in our community to create with new mediums that might not have been available before because they didn’t have the tools or the know-how. Some of these tools include a laser cutter, 3D printers, a vinyl cutter, and electronics for creating LED art.

The Sun Gallery Makerspace & renovated Courtyard will be revealed along with a special ribbon cutting at 2 PM to celebrate the opening that the people of Hayward voted on to make this project possible with a generous grant. There will be live demos and learning for kids and adults alike alongside other fun maker activities.

Light snacks and beverages will be served, and we will have a food truck on hand for lunch

During the day we’ll feature local musicians with two sets at 1 and 3pm organized by Jim Bedford, a Castro Valley based music instructor. We’ll hear a variety of music from Bob and Lorraine, Martie Canterberry, Eric Moehle, James Mira, and some jazz and blues from his younger students (8 and 9 years old!) Jay Rhodes and Abel Quiroga.

Come dressed as you would for any of our receptions, but if you’d like to pay homage to our new mural featuring #STEAMpunkStan, steampunk wear is encouraged!

Again, this is a big day for our artists new and old, budding makers, and Hayward as a whole. We’re excited to join the community of Bay Area Makerspaces & Hackerspaces, with the twist that we’re closer to the heart of the bay where we all live and built on the foundation of our amazing artist community. We hope you can make it!
